[jitsi-dev] offline text messages are not displayed

#1

- wrote a message to a user who is not logged in
- verified that message was present and correct in our jabber server
- the formerly unconnected user connect
- the offline message is not displayed but has disappeared from the
jabber database

this behaviour is unique to jitsi - neither pidgin nor psi do swollow
offline messages.

#2

check the history, i have seen offline messages going into the history
directly without ever appearing as "new"

I experienced the same problem ... when i go offline send message and then go online (without exiting Jitsi) offline message comes ok. But if I close Jitsi completely then message often don't come at all ... I didn't see it in history when it happened.

clearification:

user sp is always online and sends msgs
user dr chnges his online/connection state

dr goes offlline, sp sends a message to dr, dr goes online and the
offline message is (always?) displayed.
dr closes jitsi, sp sends a main to dr, dr starts jitsi and the offline
message is sometimes displayed, sometimes not
dr's account ist deactivated (jitsi: tools->settings->account uncheck),
sp sends a message, dr's account is activated (jitsi:
tools->settings->account uncheck) and the offline messages is rarely
displayd (1 of 20-30)

while testing we somehow (series of offline, online, .. disable account,
enabne account, ..) succeeded to put ds's jitsi in a state where it did
not display any messages - not even when dr was online. dr had to
restart jitsi - at least, we were unable to find another way to convice
jitsi to leave this state.

hello,

because this issue could be a show stopper (in advantage of skype), it
would be interesting to us, to know if it's 'home grown' at our site or
if it's of 'general nature' and/or if there are any workarounds.

any comments?

best regards, gustav

Never tried this so don't know. You may want to look at the logs and see if something interesting happens when such messages arrive in Jitsi.

For what its worth, Jitsi does show admin messages from Openfire.

sorry - yes, i wanted to send it to the list.

i installed an opefire server

1. created 2 accounts dr and sp, logged in into both from different
machines, authorized each other, user sp logged out
(tools->options->removed the tick), user dr sent an message to user sp,
user a logged in and did not see the offline message.

2.1 user sp terminates jitsi, user dr sends a msg to user sp, user sp
starts jitsi -> offline message is displayed.
2.2. user sp logs out ((tools->options->removed the tick), user dr send
a msg to sp, sp logs in and the offline message is not displayed,
instead a null pointer exception is written to jitsi's .log file of user sp.

thanks, ingo for the patch.

no more null pointer exceptions.

using jitsi 2.3.4759 and switching back to ejabberd (which is our
xmpp-server)

A.1. user sp starts up jitsi, logs in and sends a message to user dr
(who's jitsi is not running) - using ejabberd admin, the message is visible

A.2. user dr starts up jitsi, logs in - no message is displayed and
message is removed from ejabberd's storage

B.1. user dr goes offline (tools->options->removed the tick), user sp
sends offline message which can be viewed using ejabberd admin uif

B.2. . user dr goes online (tools->options->adds the tick) - no message
is displayed and message is removed from ejabberd's storage

C.1. user dr goes offline by clicking on onlie and selecting offline,
user sp sends message

C.2. user dr goes online by clicking offline and selecting online -
message is displayed

please find attached the jitsi-log of the above tests.

the behavior A and B is different whe user dr uses pidgin - pidgin
always displays offline messages.

the behavior A and B also applies to the 'initial authorization
handshake' which only seems to be possible when both users are online at
the same time.
