[jitsi-dev] Major bug causing SC to crash on Mac OS X when calls are made or received

#1

Hi SC devs,
a major bug was introduced or worsened between 3233 and 3239 for Mac
OS X. 3220, 3233 can make calls but crashes on receiving calls. 3239,
3241, 3262, 3263, 3269 crash on both making and receiving calls. I
realised this in 3241 but the oldest binary remaining on the download
page was 3239, so I was unable to refine this change to a specific
build.

My girlfriend has Mac OS X 10.6.5 Snow Leopard, SC build 3233 is on
the dock. On both my Ubuntu laptops (10.04 and 10.10) all builds I've
tried since I first tried SC (since build 3198) work fine for making
and receiving calls and work fine on my parents' Ubuntu 10.04 laptop.

When receiving a call after a boot (must be slightly slower to crash)
on 3233, a glimpse of the accept/reject dialog can be seen. Maybe that
helps narrow down where the bug is, it is after the call dialog code.

Attached are the logs for the latest build and some automatic crash
reports generated by Mac OS X intended to be sent to Apple.

I hope this helps you to track down the bug(s) that cause the crashes.

Thank you.

I have found another way to crash SC only on the Mac so it is probably
related and may help you track down the problem.

Typing something into the 'Enter name or number' search box will crash
SC on the Mac on all the builds I've tried so far:

3220, 3233, 3239, 3241, 3262, 3263, 3269, 3271, 3272, 3273, 3281

On all these builds clicking the call history clock button does not
crash SC. Furthermore, typing something into the search box when in
call history view works as expected and does not crash SC.

I have attached a report of a crash caused by typing a 'j' into the
search box on the latest build.

I also notice on all these builds that there is a small delay between
typing a 'j' and SC crashing. In this delay a collapsible 'Call
history' list appears below the contact list and will often display a
few results before crashing but sometimes, especially if I type
something as soon as SC starts, SC will crash before the Call history
list has a chance to show any search results.

Build 3233 is still in the dock so Snow Leopard cannot benefit from
new features and bug fixes in newer builds. I am surprised that such a
critical bug has not been discovered by anyone else. I wonder whether
I am the only person that has tried SC on Snow Leopard and that it
works fine on Leopard but I do not have easy access to any earlier
version of Mac OS X so I cannot verify this claim.

I am afraid haven't seen the issue with neither of these.

Certainly not. There simply seems to be something on your system that
causes SC to crash there. We'll look into this.

In the mean time, could you please open an issue on our tracker? If
would be great if you could attach your crash reports and a link to this
thread when you do.

Cheers,
Emil

...

There simply seems to be something on your system that
causes SC to crash there. We'll look into this.

The system was new for Christmas. Could OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice
have an effect? I know they are Java-based. OpenOffice.org 3.2 was
initially installed, then it was uninstalled and replaced by
LibreOffice 3.3 when it was released on Jan 25th. That is the only
thing I can think of that might affect SC. There is nothing unusual
about this system.

In the mean time, could you please open an issue on our tracker? If

thread when you do.

I have just made an account at java.net and become an observer. I have
opened an issue as requested:

Thank you very much for the fix in 3284.

Making calls, receiving calls and typing in the search box no longer
crash SC in the latest build. This issue is resolved.

Thank you.
James.
