[jitsi-dev] Mailing list confusion

#1

Dear all,

"dev@jitsi.java.net Jitsi" <dev@jitsi.java.net> is the old mailing list. Somehow mailing list management is not done or I am too stupid to understand the concept behind this.

Wouldn't it be best to just forward all mails from the old mail address to the new and kill off the old list entirely?

Not sure but I'd like to unsubscribe both since more and more mails keep flooding my inbox coming through via the old address.

I thus unsubscribed form the mailman list. How can I subscribe from the other list?

Best,
steve

Hey Steve,

Dear all,

"dev@jitsi.java.net Jitsi" <dev@jitsi.java.net> is the old mailing list.

It is indeed!

Somehow mailing list management is not done or I am too stupid to understand the concept behind this.

Wouldn't it be best to just forward all mails from the old mail address to the new

This is already setup.

and kill off the old list entirely?

Well no, because someone has to redirect mails from the old mail address
to the new.

We did however remove everyone from there.

Not sure but I'd like to unsubscribe both since more and more mails keep flooding my inbox coming through via the old address.

Sorry about this. There was indeed a snafu in the befinning so that
people were all getting mails that were destined for dev-bounces. This
was fixed last week.

Now, since people still have the old address, mails keep being send to
it by mistake. However, since noone is subscribed there (because
everyone has been moved to the new list), these mails need to be moderated.

I didn't want people to have to wait for manual moderation so I thought
I'd add back everyone and simply set their "NOMAIL" flag.

This had the undesired side effect of sending a welcome mail to
everyone. I then discovered that there is no way for us to set the
NOMAIL option through the java.net or SYMPA mail interface. So despite
the fact that everyone was going to get a second mail I had to remove
people back because otherwise they were going to get a lot of duplicates.

You therefore all received two garbage mails today. Already sent a note
about this here:

http://lists.jitsi.org/pipermail/dev/2013-May/017198.html

If in addition to these two messages, you had others that "keep flooding
your inbox" then that's a problem we need to investigate.

If you were only flooded by these two messages this week, then we are
fine and I can only apologise for the SNAFU.

I thus unsubscribed form the mailman list. How can I subscribe from the other list?

I suppose you meant "unsubscribe" in your second sentence above. If so,
then you are OK: you are currently not subscribed to either list.

Cheers,
Emil

Hey Emil et al,

thanks for this thorough reply. I didn't mind the two messages that accidentally got out. Transition is a painful process and stuff like that just happens. That's no problem and perfectly fine.

My problem was / is (?) that I keep receiving mails into my inbox that instead of being addressed to Jitsi Developers <dev@jitsi.org> were either addressed only to the old address or the old AND the new address.

I assume this is due to my mail filters not applying when mail to the old address is being forwarded to the new but "TO:" remains with the old address.

So most likely this is my own fault for having incorrect mail filters.

Excuse the noise
