[jitsi-dev] Keep alive method

#1

Hi,

At the moment the default Keep alive method is 'REGISTER' every 25
seconds.

I would suggest changing this to 'OPTIONS'.

The reason is 'REGISTER' will put much more load on the SIP Server
(expensive database lookups to update location tables etc.). compared
to lightweight reply to 'OPTIONS' request.

The goal of keeping NAT binding open is served equally well by both
REGISTER and OPTIONS requests.

Regards,
Chris

We've had this kind of request previously too, so I suppose we could
change this. In the mean time though, you do know that you could change
this by yourself, right?

Yes, yes. I know I can change it manually to 'OPTIONS' at the moment.

My only problem is 'REGISTER' is currently a default setting and I
wouldn't like to be a service provider with few hundred thousands of
Jitsi users all using a default setting at the moment

I would even say we should remove 'REGISTER' and keep 'OPTIONS' and
'NONE' only. Virtually all SIP UA use OPTIONS as NAT keep alive and
none uses REGISTER - and for a good reason.

Providers can remotely provision Jitsi so if REGISTERs are a problem for
them this would take care of it.

Anyways, I already said we are going to change this so no worries. I'd
still appreciate some specific load comparisons showing how REGISTERs
are more expensive if someone has any.

Cheers,
Emil

Build 3560 also takes care of this issue. OPTIONS is now the default
keep-alive method.

Emil
