[jitsi-dev] Join a Jitsi-meet as an audio-only participant?

#1

Hello,

Is it somehow possible to join a conference via jitsi-meet, with your video
muted?

Regard,

  Guus

#2

Hello Guss,

We are currently working on adding an option to start in the audio only mode.

Regards,
Pawel

Ah, that's good news! How are you intending to trigger that? A query
parameter, something like that?

Hey Paweł,

In last weeks call, I brought this up. I think it was Saúl that expressed
some concern. There are two very similar concepts, which in their details
are very different:

   - A mode in which the room is "audio only" - here, every participant
that joins would only share audio: every participant shares the same
   configuration, with regards to 'video/audio-only'
   - A mode in which every participant upon joining can decide to join with
muted video, or not: this configuration is not shared between participants.

I think Saúl was concerned that it's the first solution that is under
development.

To be explicit: In my question, I was referring to the second option: I
would like to have some users join with video, while others join the same
room, without video.

Could you shed some light on this?

Regards,

  Guus

Hello Guss,

Hey Paweł,

In last weeks call, I brought this up. I think it was Saúl that expressed
some concern. There are two very similar concepts, which in their details
are very different:

A mode in which the room is "audio only" - here, every participant that
joins would only share audio: every participant shares the same
configuration, with regards to 'video/audio-only'

Currently there is 'startAudioOnly' config option under development
which will enable the audio only mode from the start. It can be set
either globally in config.js or as part of the URL. When in config.js
it will affect every participant unless the value is overridden in the
URL, for example:
https://meet.jit.si/conference#config.startAudioOnly=false. So the
value set in the config.js can serve as default for the deployment and
the URL to adjust on per user basis.

I'm not aware of any 'video only' mode. We also don't have the option
to start audio or video muted for a single user. There are start muted
configurations, but those are based on the number of participants and
are a different thing. For example a conference can be configured to
make every 5th and next participant to join video muted. It's possible
that we'll be also adding simple versions of start audio/video muted
in the near future, but I can't promise anything.

Regards,
Pawel

Hi Paweł,

So, if I understand you correctly, a single user would be able to join
"video muted" when joining a room with #config.startAudioOnly=true appended
to the URL, while the other users will join the same room with video
enabled, by joining using #config.startAudioOnly=false (depending on the
default in config.js, one of these would not be needed).

That would serve my need perfectly (I am currently not interested in a
'video only' mode).

Assuming that the above is true, then I don't understand what you mean with
"We don't have the option to start audio or video muted for a single user"
in the second paragraph of your reply. How does that compare with what you
describe in the first paragraph?

Also: when can I test this? hashtagletmebeyourguineapig

Audio only mode not only mutes your local video, but also does not
receive any remote video.

Probably in this week.

receive any remote video.

Oh, now I understand the difference. Sadly, that's actually what I need:
Receive, but don't send video (see, but not be seen).

Would it be possible to add a similar option to what you're already
building? As users can already manually 'mute' themselves, I expect that
the building blocks are mostly available - especially when combined with
whatever URL parsing that you're now building for startAudioOnly. Again,
I'd be happy to contribute in any way/shape/form that's desirable.

So, many things have happened since we last exchanged emails. As we
discussed in yesterday's "the Call", Jitsi Meet now has two new
boolean-typed options: startWithAudioMuted and startWithVideoMuted. The
default that is configured in config.js can be overridden with a URL
parameter. Setting the value to 'true' will cause a participant to join a
meet with the corresponding media type muted (but still be able to receive
that media-type). Exactly what I was after!

I'm also seeing options named startAudioMuted / startVideoMuted (note the
missing 'with'), which are integer-typed. I think that these intend to mute
the media stream of participants that join after a meet grows to a certain
size, participant wise.

Are both options going to be supported, or am I looking at fragments of
early drafts of the implementation (or am I missing the point completely
and did I misread things)?

Testing:

This will start me in a conference with my video muted (as expected):
https://meet.jit.si/guustest#config.startAudioOnly=true

This does not appear to mute anything (I expected it to mute my video):
https://meet.jit.si/guustest#config.startWithVideoMuted=true (doesn't work
with the 'audio' variant either)

Am I doing something wrong, or isn't the implementation deployed to
