[jitsi-dev] Jitsi Meet Zoom level / cropping?

#1

Hi guys,

Recently, I bought a new laptop. With this laptop, I notice that in Jitsi
Meet, my video shows me a lot more "zoomed in" as compared to my previous
laptop. My face would barely fit in the frame. Somewhat annoying, but
workable. I assumed that this was due to the difference in hardware.

Today, however, I was in a Google Hangout. There, the level of "zoom" was a
lot different. I've made two screenshots (sfw) for comparison purposes:

Hangouts: https://ibin.co/35SzFWGdgYff.png

Jitsi Meet: https://ibin.co/35SzV88wnZ4Z.png

Jitsi Meet gives me similar results, when using meet.jit.si or a local
install.

Playing a bit with Cheese (the webcam tool on Ubuntu, not the dairy
product), gives me a result similar to Hangouts. What's going on here? Is
Jitsi zooming, or cropping? Changing the browser window width or height
didn't make the zoom level any better.

Regards,

  Guus

Hi Guus,

From the Hangouts screenshot I see that your camera provides a 4:9 video feed that Jitsi Meet crops and zooms to fill the entire wide screen, as you’ve already noticed. I think this is by design. That said, it might be useful to provide some indication to the user or make this behavior somehow configurable.

George

That's correct. We try to fill in the screen but we should probably have a
max ratio

Jitsi is basically trying to avoid having black bars to the side of the
video? I can appreciate that - the resulting image in my case however, is
pretty awful (and for once, my looks are not the primary cause for that
). Configuration would be good, or perhaps setting a background-color that
mimics the edges of the video?

Yes, I agree it's not great and that is why I am saying it would be good to
just not do it over a certain percentage.

Did not see your reply when I sent mine. Sounds like a plan! Whatever works
for you. I don't have a clue where to apply these changes, but I'd be happy
to perform some tests on modified code, if that's helpful.
