(1) The notion of plugins is too complicated for me as a user and I prefer
simple messaging. Their names mean nothing to me. Besides, a great deal of
them are pretty much mandatory, not optional.
(2) Its user interface (colors and fonts) is not consistent with the rest
of the UI on Windows.
-1 because we're actually working around the fact that the application
takes noticeable time before it shows any user interface otherwise. As much
as I would like to remedy that slow startup and not have a splash screen,
we've not been there for a long time and any early indication is acceptable
for me.

I am not a fan of splash screens at all but yes, slow start-up time is quite an issue so until we fix it, this is the best we've got.
Hopefully the CEF integration would allow us to show something much earlier and then attach the rest of the app to it as it loads.
