[jitsi-dev] Issue Report: No interface shown

#1

Issue: Jitsi.exe starts but no interface is shown.
Affected OS: Windows 7 64 bit.

We are testing Jitsi on multiple Windows platforms and in one instance
we have found a problem starting the interface of Jitsi. Jitsi.exe
will show up in Task Manager but otherwise nothing happens. We have
tried running explicitly as administrator, using various compatibility
modes etc. and also checked for local issues with any installed
security software. We have of course also tried reinstalling,
rebooting Windows etc. Boot the 32 and 64 bit installer have been tried.

We have not found others on the internet reporting the same issue so
perhaps it is a local issue that is too unique for you to spend time
troubleshooting. However, we really have run out of ideas and we
cannot recommend Jitsi to our users if we can't make it work on our
own PC's. So if you have any ideas they will be more than welcome. If
not, we will test again when the next version of Jitsi is released.

Thanks so much for the work you do with Jitsi. The internet has a need
for the privacy offered by your software.

Kind regards

you'd need to have a JDK installed.

Hey there,

You've probably already tried this but just to be sure: did you check if the systray icon is appearing? Did you try showing Jitsi from there?

I am now able to start Jitsi!

Usually I shut down jitsi.exe because nothing seems to happen and it
takes up a lot of CPU. This time I accidentally forgot to shut the
process down and left the computer. When I got back the Jitsi
interface had shown up.

I then closed Jitsi and started it again, this time using my stopwatch
to see how long it takes Jitsi to start on this specific computer. It
took exactly 13 minutes and 33 seconds.

So I guess that's good, I can now start using Jitsi on this computer
too. But of course that is a very long time for a program to start and
the CPU is at 50-60% while doing it. I have not seen this behavior on
any other machines but if you have any idea what might be causing it I
am definitely interested. I guess it will be a bit challenging to use
Jitsi as it is now.

In fairness this computer is not the newest or fastest. It has 2GB RAM
and a 1,9GHz duo CPU. But it still seems to me something is not right.

Now that I have been able to start the interface of Jitsi I have done
further testing. A few points as follows...

** I tried to start Jitsi with all other programs shut down, including
security programs. It now took 9 minutes and 35 seconds to start.

** I've noticed that a similar issue occurs when trying to call
another user in Jitsi (using XMPP). The CPU rises and the call only
goes through after about 10 minutes or so. It is the same for both
incoming and outgoing calls.

** Using Process Monitor I can see that the CPU load is caused by
jitsi.exe constantly reading/writing to the registry. I have attached
2 screenshots from Process Monitor.

** Any chance I can send you an actual log file?

Please let me know if this should not be interesting to you. I dislike
spammers as much as you do.

Hi
I'm not sure if you ever received my last email. Reason being I got
this back in an auto-reply:
"Either the message will get posted to the list, or you will receive
notification of the moderator's decision."

I never received any response. I hope you saw it in case anyone else
should have the same issue. I am now using Jitsi on a daily basis but
it seriously causes trouble on this computer. I hope a Windows
reinstall will not be required but I have run out of other ideas.

Do you have a unusual network setup, like many network cards, disabled IPv4
or IPv6, or something in this regard that comes to mind?

There should be next to no registry activity once Jitsi is started.

** Any chance I can send you an actual log file?

I had issues with long Jitsi startup time caused by multiple Microsoft
6to4 adapters created by the system. To check it you should go to
device manager. Then in "View" select "show hidden devices" and check
"Network adapters" list. In my case I had hundrets of 6to4 adapters
and Jitsi checks all of them during startup.
