[jitsi-dev] Interface issue: contact name/address, and changing contact information

#1

Dear Jitsi developers,

When one adds a contact in the first place, there is a field entitled
"Contact Name." But what this field really means is "SIP Address."

So later, I can right-click that contact and choose "Rename contact"
and give that contact a name that I like rather than the address.

This is confusing because it leads the user to think that "name" in
both cases means the same thing, when in fact it does not.

I suggest that this confusion be remedied by changing the field in the
"Add contact" dialog to read "SIP Address."

A related problem is that there seems to be no way to change the SIP
address of a contact. One has to delete it and create a new contact. I
suggest this feature be implemented.

Indeed.

Right again.

Agreed.

The thing is that this form is used by all protocols and "Contact Name"
works for many of them. We are probably going to address this by adding
an Alias field at some point since I agree it could be confusing.

A related problem is that there seems to be no way to change the SIP

I see your point but this wouldn't be a simple change. A different ID
implies a lot of changes in the contact list, history or protocol
services. We probably won't be implementing such a change in the near
future.

Cheers,
Emil
