[jitsi-dev] Google Talk - text message encryption

#1

Hi,

I have a question about the text messages sent using Google Talk through
Jitsi. When OTR is switched off, are these messages encrypted by default
when sent over the network to Google/other users? i.e is the connection to
Google servers and other users an encrypted connection by default?

Hi there.

Yes, your connection to Gmail is encrypted with TLS by default. But it is
only about yours connection, only yours connection is encrypted.
However messages are stored unencrypted on Gmail servers. Moreover,
messages are going unencrypted from Gmail's server to recipient's server
(this fact also known as "Gmail not supports encrypted s2s"). And finally,
the way of transfer from recipient's server to recipient's client depends
only on them (mostly on recipient who have chosen his type of connection
and server)

So, to be clear:
When OTR is switched off, are these messages encrypted by default when sent
over the network to Google — YES
/other users? — NO
i.e is the connection to Google servers — YES (encrypted by default)
and other users an encrypted connection by default? — NO
