[jitsi-dev] Feature

#1

Hi!

My name is steven and I'm a student in computer sciene. Skype is the main tool that is used in my school to communicate with one another and I'm trying to convince to switch a lot of people and hearing them out why they wouldn't.

I've not yet used Jitsi as I only discovered this a week ago and am going through a examination period which keeps my attention elsewhere. The main question I had as feedback on switchin to this wonderfull project is "Does it synch with offline messages?". I've tried to read through a couple of message on the community but could not find an answer to this.

If the offline messages are stored and synched upon the first login. Could you give me advice upon what the main mechanics are behind this? I would really like to persue more people into switching to Jitsi instead of using public social media.

If it doesn't exist, I would like to add this to the feature list of upcoming changes in the development. I'm not sure how security stands towards storing this data and how it would be possible so I can't pitch in at all.

Love to hear back from you!

I am not a dev but I can prolly answer this one for you. Offline
messages only work when they are kept by the server. XMPP servers can
have this option and it works pretty well. However, one of the undoubted
benefits of jitsi is it end to end encryption which makes it all but
impossible for anyone to spy on your chats or video/voice calls. In this
case.. encrypted messages are NOT kept for offline, simply because the
session keys are just for that session and it meant to prevent chat
being hijacked by a man in the middle attack. So in that case, no,
offline messages will not be stored. What I have done in the past though
(though your friends need to be competent to be able to arrange this) is
sending a normal offline with an encrypted message with GPG. That way
the offline is still gibberish to anyone sniffing it but at least it can
be decrypted with the right key at the other end. YMMV.

Hope that helps,
