[jitsi-dev] Changing the call sound

#1

(+BCC users@jtisi.java.net)

Hey folks,

Many of you probably have a problem with our incoming call sound. I
suppose some find it a bit too aggressive, others simply grew weary of
it, and others yet just hated it right from the start.

For all these reasons, we are thinking of maybe setting a new one for 2.0

If you guys are aware of a sound that would be suitable for an incoming
call notification and has the proper IPR (I suppose CC is the best we
can hope for), then please point us to it.

The only thing is that we'd have to be pretty quick about this so let's
say that we are going to try and be done with it over the weekend so
please send suggestions before Sunday, January 27, 16:00 UTC.

Don't worry too much about this though, regardless of what happens now,
we can always change again later on.

Cheers,
Emil

Emil,

Does the incoming call sound need to be hard coded? Offer a default sound,
and let us choose to keep or change it. My 2 cents.

Attached are three candidates sampled from my keyboard. I'd be happy to
adapt any of these if needed (or try something completely different).

We are already doing this, and users can already change all event sounds
(including this one). My mail was only about the sound configured by
default. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Hi Emil,

I am totally up for a new sound.

Majority of of users complained about it when I rolled it out to 90 people
in the office.

I'd be quite happy with a 'normal' ring sound, something like this:

I found this one interesting:

(But it has some hissing during the first half.)

David, I love marimba2. Simple and discreet. I never quite understood why instant messaging services needed to do some sort of insane crazy dance just for an incoming call.

marimba 2 would bring the jitsi default call sound into modern times. And I can report, that each user I convinced to try out jitsi was somewhat offended and gave me an irritated look when they heard the default incoming call sound.

So Emil, thanks for opening this discussion and David thanks soo much for that lovely marimba2 sample.

Can wait to see this happening

Thanks David, everyone,

I very much like the idea of using a sound from hour community. I like
all three of them, but I think I prefer the ones that are slightly
longer since this would make them more recognisable, so I preferred
celesta and harp. Maybe it was the lower pitch that made marumba more
appealing?

David, would it be possible to try a lower pitch celesta ... with maybe
a few more notes at the end?

Not sure if I agree with long = more recognizable. The sound will be repeated right? So does the length really matter?

But yeah, all three are solid. Imo the marimba is the most reduced. Maybe jitsi could even deliver default 1 and default 2 and cover user taste?
