High bandwidth with WebKit with activated simulcast


we started a test where we joined 20 Windows PCs with Chrome to a Jitsi room on our own Jitsi server, we got the result:

  • About 4 MBit/s required bandwidth on a client
  • About 60 MBit/s required bandwidth (down- and upload) on the Jitsi host

After that we´ve added a single WebKit device, the bandwidth increases rapidly:

  • About 20 MBit/s on a client
  • About 200-900 MBit/s on the server

The problem occurs with the following configurations:

  • Current Mac (Safari only)
  • Latest iPhone/iPad (All browsers)

The Jitsi Meet app, Windows and other browsers on Mac (Chrome, Opera) are not affected.

After further testing, we found that the problem only occurs with simulcast enabled.

We think it makes a lot of sense to enable simulcast to get the best quality to all users in the room.
Is this a known problem or does anyone know a solution to this?

One additional information:
When the problem occurs, the room is going down from VP9 to VP8

No, the 20 mbit/s are download

Are you using tile view or stage view? If in tile view, check the received resolution by hovering over the “signal bars”. What do you get on the receiving end?

It seems to be happening in both views, tile and stage view

I´m getting about 1000 kbps down and 1000 kbps up with VP9 and my last test where I used 7 clients.
After one WebKit device enters the room it´s going down to VP8 with about 5000 kbps down and 2000 kbps up.
All 7 clients send and receive camera pictures with 720p.
Doesn´t WebKit support VP9 with activated simulcast or what´s the reason that Jitsi is switching to VP8?

Did you disable simulcast? You should not be receiving 720p for all the participants at the same time!

Did you adjust your config.js to allow HD definition for up to/more than 7 clients? The default setting is 2.

Do you mean maxFullResolutionParticipants? I set it to -1 because our goal is to see all participants the whole time.
Simulcast is enabled because when we don´t use it, I think all participants will get a worse picture if one pariticpant with a worse bandwidth joins the room.

At full resolution though?! If you enable full resolution why are you then wondering why you get high bandwidth usage?

I´m not wondering about high bandwidth usage, I´m wondering why I´m getting
eight times as much bandwidth when one webkit device joins the room with 20 Windows PCs.
After my tests I think the problem is that webkit doesn´t support simulcast together with VP9 and as a result the room changes to VP8 and I´m getting the eightfold bandwidth.

So if I´m right I´ve now the options:

  • Disable simulcast
  • Set maxFullResolutionParticipants
  • Disable VP9 and lower the bitrate for VP8

My aim is a Jitsi host where I have in best case 4 rooms with each 20-25 participants. One person (the docent) shares his desktop and the students can see the camera pictures of each other. The students should be able to join with a webkit device.
The server has enough power, but in our tests with one room and 20 devices (Windows and webkit) with activated cameras the problem was that the network card get up to 1 gbps.

Have you got some further ideas / config options to realize this?

I don’t understand why you’ve set maxFullResolutionParticipants: -1. This means that in tile view all participants will be received in HD (if you have enough bandwidth) even though they are being displayed small. This will use large amounts of bandwidth in larger rooms.

You said you set this because “[y]our goal is to see all participants the whole time”, but that seems based on a misunderstanding of what this setting does.

VP8 bitrates are much higher than VP9 especially at the resolutions you are requesting. I see that you have ideal camera resolution set to 1080p in your config. The conference switches to VP8 when WebKit/Firefox client joins the call since neither of them do VP9 properly (there are rendering and encode issues with VP9 on both). If you want to force VP9, you can use videoQuality.enforcePreferredCodec=true in your config.js.
maxFullResolutionParticipants=-1 doesn’t guarantee that you receive all videos, it only makes sure clients requests resolutions based on the viewport sizes even if they are higher than 720. It in fact creates the opposite effect, you will see bridge suspending videos more often if the clients do not have enough downlink (20 Mbps).

Based on this config, the client would be requesting 720p only if height >= 1080, 360p if height >= 720 and 180p if height >= 360. The keys represent the minimal thumbnail height for the quality level. Is that how you understand it ?

Okay, thanks for your tips and hints, now I´m getting much lower bandwidth results.
I think the bitrate for VP8 are much too high and that´s the biggest problem now.
What do you think are the best values for the bitrate for VP8 and VP9 to get a good picture for the high quality option? Like I saw, the default values are quitely low for 1080p:

How do you handle with WebKit devices, is it better to prefer and enforce VP9 or are there reasons to stay only at VP8?

high there is based on 720p, so for 1080p you’ll want to bump it up. Double or slightly less would make sense; the frames before compression are 2.25x the size.

I think if your WebKit users are all using up-to-date Safari / iOS you might be able to enforce VP9. I’ve found that it works fine on macOS Safari 16, but some of the WebKit bugs were related to hardware decode, so it might vary by device on the iOS side.
