Estimated maximum participants for a given server specs

I would like to know if you guys have an idea how many participants can a server with this specs handle?

Jitsi Meet Server (default install)

  • AWS EC2 t3.extralarge
  • 4 vCPU
  • 16GB RAM
  • 8GB gp3 storage
  • Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Also, how many VideoBridge servers do I need to handle 500 participants? I want to have an idea on how many JVB2 servers I need to provision or auto-scale to handle such number of participants.

Thanks in advance.

That server should be able to easily handle about 200 participants (and that’s being on the safe side; it can likely handle more). To host 500 participants, consider deploying about 3 JVBs with specs of say 4GB/8GB RAM each. Again, these numbers are to be on the safe side.

With all that said, your most important consideration is bandwidth. That’s likely to tank before anything else.

Thanks @Freddie for the insight.

Do you happen to have an idea how much bandwidth it would require for a 1 hour meeting with 500 participants? As we know, AWS charges for data transfer out.

No, I don’t. It depends on a lot of things - whether stage/tile view, codec negotiated, how many users have their cams on e.t.c…
