Contract Work To Implement AV1

Is anyone who has enough experience with the video bridge and jicofo up for contract work to get AV1 working with Jitsi?

Work in already underway to support it.

For those DMing please read the requirement first. It implementing AV1 - not hosting, nor scaling or anything else. If you are fit, you should already know where Jitsi is with VP8, VP9 and AV1.

FYI, after a quick search, AV1 encoding time looks like 3 times slower than VP9. So you will need much more CPU power while encoding the video.

For our use case, thats perfectly fine. We aren’t doing standard meetings so a slower/more resource intensive encoding that higher quality and/or reliability is totally fine.

If anyone is interested in testing the impact of AV1 encoding out on their own hardware, you can already use AV1 with P2P today, just set p2p.preferredCodec to "AV1" in config.js — even though it isn’t in the list of acceptable values in the comment — and use a recent version of Chrome.

Interesting, so as long as it doesn’t go through the bridge, it will work.
