Cant get running jitsi on local ip in docker (new to docker)

Hi, I have a little experience in installing/configuring jitsi but totally new to docker. I just gathered basic knowledges about docker. then I followed the instruction in https://github.com/jitsi/docker-jitsi-meet#quick-start and created “new.env” where my configuration will be. my new.env :

is it ok? and should I restart the yml file?
for now I just want the feel like quick install(without jigasi/etherpad/jibri) I did in my local ip “192.168.0.149” (shared ip but worked fine in quick install) and able to configure on my own in next step with recreating image.
I didnt find anything but my directory in the “CONFIG=/home/fuji/jitsi-docker” folder. my 4 containers are running fine

and I can now access through “localhost” but not through “192.168.0.149” ,cant even access docker-host address. why is that? and what should I do?
will love to get any suggestion to find helpful details about this docker thing that I will need. I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi-MGFhrad0&list=PLhW3qG5bs-L99pQsZ74f-LC-tOEsBp2rK full series,its good for beginners but now I need instruction for production level. Thanx :heart:

srry, I did little mistake and now I can access “192.168.0.149:8000” but not “192.168.0.149:8443”(400 bad request)
and I still cant find configuration files in “CONFIG=/home/fuji/jitsi-docker” ,is this path start from root? I cant get log files too. for production mode in server pc, should I just put “public-ip” in “public”
I am still confuse how can I then work in this and then regenarate the docker image for later use. apology if said anything wrong as a new comer.

Perhaps you are acessing it as HTTP and haven’t enabled redirection?

No, that’s an aboslute path so stuff should be there. Do you get any errors in Docker when starting the containers? How do you run docker-compose up ?

You’d just put the server’s Public IP address.

You don’t need to regenerate the images. Starting from scratch with the same ./env file will yield the same setup. If you need to keep the config across setups you can just copy the config directory, but unless you are adding users manually to prosody you should be ok.

I did a little wrong but then I started from scratch. created “home/jitsi-docker” and go inside it. then followed the instruction:

all containers are up now but there is nothing in my https://localhost:8443 or http://localhost:8000 not even in 192.168.0.149:8000/8443 though my container is up and running - “sudo docker container ps

but I dont know why I cant access the web. is there anything silly mistakes I am making? I just cant find out.my local ip is 192.168.0.149 (shared ip) . here is the output of “sudo docker-compose up” before I killing the containers :slight_smile:

This should be 192.168.0.149 in your case.

Let’s Encrypt won’t work on an IP address, just don’t enable it.

There is no need to customize that. Leave all references to “meet.jitsi” unchanged, as they work automatically.

then made down the docker-compose and then up but still doesnt working :slight_smile: after making changes in “.env” shouldnt I just down then up the docker-compose to load the changes to up?

It’s a “fake” domain. Only works internally to the Docker containers.

Have you deleted ~/jitsi-docker/config after making changes to the env file? Otherwise the changes won’t be applied.

Your server will be independent. When you are running in a Docker environment there is a builtin DNS server which can resolve “fake” domains that you give it. If you look at the docker-compose.yml file you’ll see that all containers partake in the “meet.jitsi” network. “.jitsi” is not a valid TLD, but Docker will resolve it to the internal container IP.

This setup is arguably more isolated, since that domain name is only reachable in a specific Docker Compose setup and not outside of it.

so u are saying the fake domains actually redirect to the docker host address so I dont need to specify the local ip in xmpp configuration?
and yeah It run well with meet.jitsi but now I prefer to run with my local ip for my understanding/debugging.
but one problem, I can access through specifying the port 192.168.0.149:8000/8443 (before using “192.168.0.149” instead of “meet.jitsi”, I also had to add “http/https”… is this related to changing the fake domain name? ) but still cant access only through the PUBLIC_URL=“https://192.168.0.149”, I have to specify the port. I mean is there any way to set “default” so it will go to that port if isn’t specified…? I even want to go specific port of ip by just “192.168.0.149” what I got previously by quick install process.

so as i guess… docker_host is actually alltime the local ip where I where I wanna run the docker and maintain it internally and then just create a gateway through public_url to outside world ?? though I cant just go by public url,have to specify port too :frowning_face:

Not to the docker host address, but to each container address.

Don’t. You clearly don’t understand the implications. There are literally 0 reasons why you’d want to change that.

In order to avoid speifying the port you need to use the default ports. That’s 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS. You can change those in your .env file.

Thanx… I understand the complications… but I changed it and it is working though… I understand docker somehow manages to get the needed container id. I wanted to change because after quick install I became comfortable to see these files name with local ip(but yeah,here these actually the containers id)… thats it. so u mean, below “Advanced configuration options (you generally don’t need to change these)” i really neednt change something but to just enable/disable? ok… I will … can u plz tell me about the network part of the docker-compose config ? or anywhere I can find a little more details about it?

We define a Docker “user defined network” here: https://github.com/jitsi/docker-jitsi-meet/blob/master/docker-compose.yml#L159 then eacch container is configured to be a part of it: https://github.com/jitsi/docker-jitsi-meet/blob/master/docker-compose.yml#L155 and some of them have an alias, so you can resolve their adress by using that FQDN: https://github.com/jitsi/docker-jitsi-meet/blob/master/docker-compose.yml#L104

but as I just changed the fake domain name… this just dont create problems? as in yml file we said about “meet.jitsi”? @saghul

jicofo and jvb has not “alias” so if I change the xmpp_server,it wont affect jicofo/jvb?

If you change the fake domain name you’ll have to change it everywhere.

The alias is only needed when you need to connect directly to a container using a FQDN. Those 2 don’t need an alias since they connect to the XMPP server / MUC instead.

I followed ur insruction… deleted the config file and then after changing “meet.jitsi” to “192.168.0.149” in xmpp parts i ran again… and worked… but I will fix it…
but I cant access the public url “https://192.168.0.149” why is that for? i have to specify the port,is this normal?
