Building android debug SDK using `assembleDebug`

I am building the SDK myself and integrating in my app.

I am getting a SIGABRT and would like to debug the root cause so I modified the android/scripts/release-sdk.sh file and the build.gradle files to generate debug builds instead of release.

The maven repo is build fine, but at runtime I get the following error

No virtual method setBundleDeltasEnabled

Has anybody successfully built and ran a debug version of the SDK within another RN app?

How did you build the SDK ?
While following the instruction at https://jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs/dev-guide/dev-guide-android-sdk, it is failing at the ```
./android/scripts/release-sdk.sh /tmp/repo

 with following error :

> Task :sdk:bundleReleaseJsAndAssets
